Welcome back, Tiger Woods: If only for one day, the world's greatest golfer reappeared at the Wyndham Championship.

Offsetting a bogey on his second hole, Woods had seven birdies through 15 holes in Thursday's first round.

He started on the back nine and chipped in for a birdie on his first hole.

After that, Woods was busy collecting birdies and... enjoying himself on his best day of the year.

Apparently, even Woods can't believe it.

This hole was a surprise — Woods needed two putts and walked off with a par.

Woods finished the first round at 6 under par, a 64. He was fifth, two strokes behind William McGirt.

This is Woods' last chance to make the PGA Tour playoffs, the FedEx Cup competition that begins next week.

He has one option to make the field: Finish no worse than second at Greensboro, N.C.

So Woods is making his first appearance at the tournament. It depended on his health, always an issue in a difficult season.

"I just wanted to see, first of all, how my body was going to be feeling," Woods said.

"After grinding it out trying to play Whistling Straits, practicing, to see how everything felt if I was ready to go, and then make a push to try and get in the playoffs."

Woods know he must begin playing consistently well, tournament after tournament.

It begins at Sedgefield Country Club in what could be the end of Woods' PGA Tour season.
