Tiger shocked by Open woe

Tiger Woods admitted to a sense of surprise after falling well short of his own expectations at The Open and missing the cut by seven shots.

High winds held up the already delayed completion of many second rounds at St Andrews until late on Saturday evening.

However, Woods' hopes of contending for a fourth Claret Jug were dashed long before then - with a woeful 76 in relatively benign conditions on day one leaving him well off the pace.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Woods had expressed optimism over his chances at a venue he holds in high regard.

Asked if he was surprised by his subsequent poor performance, culminating in a second-round 75, Woods said: "Absolutely. I felt like I was playing well enough to win this event.

"On the very first hole on the first day, I fat a sand wedge in the water. I fatted my 3-iron off the tee, and then I fatted my 8-iron into the green on two, drove it in a divot there on four. It was just one thing after another.

"I had my opportunities, I just didn't get the ball close enough, and then when I did, I didn't make them.

"I think I only made three birdies in two days. That's not very good."

Woods has no plans to take a break after missing the cut at a second successive major for the first time in his career, and will press on with plans to compete at the Quicken Loans National in a fortnight.

The former world number one received a rousing reception on 18 and expects to be back at the Old Course in 2020.

On the prospect of playing in the next Open at St Andrews, Woods replied: "Usually every five years, right? Yeah, so I'll probably have less hair then and hopefully a little better game."
