Tiger breaks drought

Tiger Woods ended his two-year wait for a professional victory when he won the Chevron World Challenge ahead of Zach Johnson on Sunday.

Woods, a 14-time major champion, had been without a tournament win since the Australian Masters in November 2009.

Revelations of marital infidelity soon after led to divorce and a loss of form, compounded by successive injury problems.

The 35-year-old lost his status as world number one after a record 281 consecutive weeks, eventually sliding as low as 52nd in the rankings.

But he showed signs of revival with a third-place finish at the Australian Open in November, before helping the United States win the Presidents Cup a week later.

And Woods finally ended his drought with a one-shot victory at the Sherwood Country Club, California.

A three-under-par final round of 69 saw him finish just ahead of Johnson, 10-under overall for a competition Woods hosts as part of his charitable foundation.

Former US Masters champion Johnson led his playing partner by one shot going into the final two holes in Thousand Oaks, California.

The tournament looked to be heading for a playoff when Woods birdied the par-three 17th from 15ft.

A six-foot birdie putt on the last then saw Woods claim a dramatic victory, after Johnson could only make par.

Johnson finished with a one-under 71, good enough for outright second at nine under.

And Englishman Paul Casey ended an injury-hit year with a third-placed finish, five shots off the lead at five under.

Australian Jason Day finished 15th in the 18-man field at even par.
