Sam Hutsby was the star of the show on the opening day of the final stage of European Tour qualifying in Girona, while Australian Andrew Tampion made a great start.

Englishman Hutsby carded a stunning 10-under-par 60 at the PGA Catalunya Resort, giving him a three-shot lead ahead of Tim Sluiter of the Netherlands.

American Patrick Reed is a shot further back at six under with Tampion one of eight players in a tie for fourth at five under.

Tampion mixed six birdies with one bogey on the Purple Tour course, but the day belonged to Hutsby after a simply sublime round of golf.

The Portsmouth-born golfer carded eight birdies and an eagle throughout his blemish-free round, starting with a hat-trick of birdies.

Another birdie on hole six was followed by an eagle, and he added four more birdies on the back nine.

Hutsby could have made European Tour history on his final hole of the day, with no player on the tour yet to hit a round under 60.

Hutsby had the chance to do just that when he had a putt for an eagle on the par-five 18th, but he had to settle for a birdie.

Sluiter also impressed with an eagle and six birdies amongst his round of 63, while Reed fired seven birdies in his 64.

David McKenzie is another Aussie in the mix after his opening round 67, while David Brandson carded an even-par round of 70.

Aaron Townsend and Wade Ormsby both have plenty of work to do at one-over and two-over respectively.

All players in the top 30, or in a tie for 30th, will qualify for the European Tour next season.

But with five rounds of play remaining, there is still much to play for in Spain.
