Jordan Spieth's outstanding season has led to him being named the PGA Tour's player of the year for 2015.

Spieth, 22, becomes the youngest winner of the award - voted for by PGA Tour members - since Tiger Woods claimed the prize in 1997 at the age of 21.

Victory at the season-ending Tour Championship last week saw Spieth claim the lucrative FedEx Cup crown - and a cool $10million bonus.

Yet the Texan achieved even more notable feats earlier in the year when he triumphed at the Masters and U.S. Open, before missing out on a play-off at The Open by a solitary shot amid significant hype as he targeted an unprecedented calendar Grand Slam.

While Jason Day finished the season in outstanding form, claiming four titles in the space of two months including a first major crown at the US PGA Championship, Spieth's success at the Tour Championship ensured he reclaimed the world number one ranking.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said: "The PGA Tour enjoyed a sensational season from every perspective as our young stars shone brighter than ever before, but none brighter than the PGA Tour player of the year Jordan Spieth.

"He captivated us throughout a memorable year that included the FedEx Cup and five victories, highlighted by two major championships.

"And the sportsmanship he displayed in both victory and defeat was a stirring indication of the role model and ambassador he has become in a very short period of time."

Daniel Berger is the 2015 rookie of the year, having qualified for the Tour Championship with a runner-up finish to Day at the BMW Championship last month.
