Spieth edges Reed, O'Hair in Valspar Championship play-off

Jordan Spieth - Cropped

Jordan Spieth won a three-man play-off to clinch the Valspar Championship on Sunday, edging out Sean O'Hair and Patrick Reed on the third extra hole.

Spieth claimed his second PGA Tour title - both have come via play-offs - on the third extra hole at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, making birdie on the 17th with a 28-foot right-to-left putt.

It was retribution of sorts for Spieth, who lost a two-man play-off to Reed at the Wyndham Championship in 2013.

The trio birdied both the 18th and 16th holes, leaving them to tackle the par-three 17th - and Spieth was able to sink his lengthy putt for a two.

O'Hair's title drought on the US tour continued, he is without a trophy since July 2011, while Reed narrowly missed out on doubling his 2015 win tally - the four-time tour winner having triumphed at the Tournament of Champions in January.

Spieth's win sees him move to number six in the world golf rankings, and also rockets him to seventh in the FedEx Cup standings.

Earlier, Reed (five-under 66), O'Hair (67) and Spieth (69) all finished the 72 regulation holes at 10 under.

Spieth was three shots back with six holes to play, but Ryan Moore - the overnight leader - finished his tournament with bogeys on 13, 16 and 18 to slip out of contention.

Outright fourth was Henrik Stenson at nine under, after he bookended his week with 67s.

Moore (72) needed a final-hole birdie to force his way into the play-off, but instead he could only bogey to finish fifth at eight under - two shots ahead of Troy Merritt (66) in sixth.

Danny Lee (67), Jason Kokrak (68) and Luke Guthrie (68) were tied for seventh, while Harris English (65), Kevin Na (66), Charles Howell III (68), Justin Thomas (68), Brian Davis (69), Vijay Singh (71) and Daniel Summerhays (71) all finished tied for 10th.

English and Na's respective revivals were noteworthy - the former starting the day tied for 53rd, while Na climbed 34 spots in the leaderboard to earn his top-10 result.
