Snedeker out to defend Canadian Open title

The American clinched his sixth PGA Tour title at Glen Abbey, seeing off the likes of Jason Bohn, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and William McGirt to win by three shots.

While the event is sandwiched between The Open Championship and the PGA Championship coming up in August - Snedeker will need to fend off strong competition to win the event for a second year.

Two-times winner Jim Furyk is among the leading contenders after finishing with a flourish at Hoylake on Sunday.

Furyk was steady if unremarkable during the first three rounds, but impressed on the final day - carding five birdies on the final nine to end on a course-equalling 65.

With the Ryder Cup on the horizon, Furyk is eager to cement his place in the top nine of the standings and secure an automatic berth in Tom Watson's team for Gleneagles.

"It's my favourite event, it's the one I look forward to the most," he said of the competition against Europe.

"Right now I have got four weeks ahead of me to try and better my situation.

"I think I'm in sixth place right now, so to try and better my situation or at least hold there to make the team. If and when that happens then it'll be whatever the captain needs."

Furyk is not the only one appearing at Royal Montreal who enjoyed a strong Open at Hoylake, with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell another coming into the competition in good form.

McDowell ended the Open five under, while world number 15 Johnson will hope to go one better than last year.

Johnson made a nightmare start in Ontario with a three-over first round, but recovered to shoot 63 on the penultimate day on the way to finishing tied second.

World number seven Kuchar is the highest ranked player in the field and will be out for an improved showing this week after breaking par just once at Hoylake.

Players from 16 countries will battle it out for the $5.7million bounty during what will be the 10th Canadian Open held at the venue.

"The field is set and we're ready to kick off the 105th playing of Canada’s National Open Championship," said tournament director Bill Paul.

"The golf course is in tremendous shape and ready to challenge the world’s best golfers for the 10th time."
