Slocum birdied holes 13 through 16 as he carded back-to-back 65s to sit alongside American counterpart Langley at 10 under in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Langley also shot his second consecutive five-under-par 65 at the Sedgefield Country Club.

The pair are one shot ahead of Brian Stuard (65), Nick Watney (64), Martin Laird (66) and Andrew Svoboda (64) through 36 holes.

Slocum - a four-time PGA Tour winner but without a victory since 2010 - made an assured start to his second round, sinking four pars in succession.

The 40-year-old sunk a birdie putt at the fifth, though he bogeyed the next hole.

He bounced back with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes as he approached the turn in a solid position, while another bogey at the 11th proved nothing more than a hiccup.

That dropped shot sparked a flurry of birdies, starting at the 13th as Slocum powered up the standings.

Langley, who teed off on the back nine, enjoyed an equally impressive second day.

The 25-year-old had three successive birdies and a bogey from his first nine holes, before going blemish-free through the next nine as he rose to the top.

Two shots off the pace is American Bo Van Pelt, who is in a nine-way tie for seventh position.

Van Pelt shot a 65 on day two to be eight-under overall alongside DA Points (65), Camilo Villegas (69), Carl Pettersson (65), Jhonattan Vegas (65), William McGirt (68), Freddie Jacobson (64), Ryo Ishikawa (62) and Brad Fritsch (63).

Webb Simpson - the 2011 champion - is a shot further back following his one-under-par 69.

Fellow Americans Brandt Snedeker, Andrew Loupe, Johnson Wagner and Kevin Kisner are also seven under for the tournament.
