Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros has died, losing his three-year battle with cancer.

Ballesteros, 54, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 after he fell unconscious at Madrid Airport, and has battled cancer ever since.

He had four operations and also underwent chemotherapy to treat the tumour, before dying in his home in northern Spain.

Ballesteros was revered in the golfing world, not only for his ability to make incredible shots, but also because of his amazing record of winning titles.

In a long and illustrious career, Ballesteros won 87 titles, 50 of which came on the European Tour.

He won three British Opens and two Masters titles, while he also was a key figure in helping Europe win back the Ryder Cup.

Viewed as a legend in Spain, Ballesteros appeared in public for the first time since his surgery in May 2009 and was given a standing ovation while watching his local football team, Racing Santander, who compete in Spain's La Liga.

Ballesteros had previously described his battle with cancer as the 'hardest challenge of my life'.
