Victorious captain Paul McGinley and four of his team are in the field for the European Tour event that sees players tackle St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie over the four days.

Two of McGinley's men, Stephen Gallacher and Martin Kaymer, are looking for a second title at the tournament, while world number one Rory McIlroy and Victor Dubuisson will also feature.

McIlroy has risen to the top of the world rankings after a superb season that has seen him claim two major victories - at the Open and the PGA Championship - before his starring role in the Ryder Cup.

The five-point victory at Gleneagles will no doubt take some matching, and McGinley goes into his first competitive tournament since July unsure quite what to expect from his game.

"The Dunhill is a tournament I've always enjoyed playing, I love playing on those golf courses," the Irishman told the press after the Ryder Cup win. "God knows where my golf game is. I feel like there's been no work gone into my golf game the last six months.

"Everything the previous [Ryder Cup] captains have told me about your golf game struggling has been proved correct.

"The first year was not so bad. I played quite well last year to be honest. This year it's really tailed off.

"When I've been on the golf course and on the practice ground, my mind has been drifting. It's not been there and I've not had the intensity and concentration you need to practice and play."

McGinley will have to compete with 12 of the 13 former winners of the tournament, including 2013 champion David Howell.

The Englishman beat Peter Uihlein in a play-off last year after both men finished their four rounds 23-under par, Howell winning the title at the second extra hole, and he is looking forward to returning this year.

"It will be lovely to come back as defending champion," he told the European Tour's website. "It's a real privilege and I shall enjoy every moment of it.

"The win last year was a long time coming, seven years after my previous win, and I could not have wished for a better place to do it than St Andrews."

The opening three days of the tournament are played over all three courses before Sunday's final round sees the remaining players compete at St Andrews.

There will also be a raft of amateur golfers taking part, including names from other sports such as Luis Figo, Johan Cruyff, Franz Klammer and Steve Redgrave.
