British Open host site Royal St. George's voted to allow female members into the club on Wednesday, according to published reports.

Royal St. George played host to the 2011 British Open when Darren Clarke held off Dustin Johnson months after his wife died from cancer.

Close to 90 percent of the club's members voted in favor of allowing women members. "It is extremely good news going forward," Tim Checketts, club secretary of Royal St. George's, told The Associated Press.

Royal St. George's became the second British golf course in a month to allow women into the club. Royal and Ancient approved the move on Feb. 10.

The rule change takes effect immediately, leaving only Royal Troon and Muirfield as the remaining British Open host sites with all-male membership.
