World number one Rory McIlroy is to make his first appearance in the United States this year when the Honda Classic tees off in Florida on Thursday.

McIlroy started the year with two successful European Tour outings in the Middle East.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman earned a runner-up's cheque at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship last month before taking out the Dubai Desert Classic for a second time in February.

McIlroy is yet to feature on the PGA Tour since September but that will come to an end at the PGA National Golf Club as the 2012 champion heads a strong field in Palm Beach Gardens.

The field, though, will be missing injury-plagued veteran Tiger Woods.

Woods announced last week that he would not be entering the Honda Classic after withdrawing from the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this month citing back pains.

The 14-time major winner missed the cut at the Phoenix Open prior to that.

"He doesn't look at this with any time deadline right now," said Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent.

"Does he expect to be at the Masters? Yes, of course. But that doesn't mean that is where he expects to debut. He just doesn't know where. I think Tiger would tell you he'd be shocked if he wasn't at the Masters.

"He's working at it. When that time comes, he's going to do some things in practice to replicate whatever he can under the gun and then put it in play."

While Woods will not be in Florida, internationals Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia will be there.

Kaymer - the world number 11 - will make his 2015 bow on the PGA Tour after suffering an uncharacteristic collapse at Abu Dhabi last month, while the German missed the cut on this course last year and does not have a strong track record early in PGA Tour seasons.

Spaniard Garcia arrives in Florida with redemption on his mind, having fallen out of play-off contention at the Northern Trust Open on Sunday.

American Russell Henley returns to defend his crown at the National Golf Club.

Graeme McDowell, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Ryan Palmer and Justin Rose are also in the field.
