MORE: Dethroned Adam Scott promises to attack at US PGA Championship

Fresh from back-to-back victories at The Open Championship and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the man who has replaced Australia's Adam Scott as the world's top-ranked player pledged to return to the Australian Golf Club in Sydney.

McIlroy pipped Scott to the title last year, winning by a stroke, after trailing by four shots heading into the final round, and the Northern Irishman claimed he is still riding the momentum from that victory.

"I'm really looking forward to coming back to Sydney in November to defend my Australian Open title," McIlroy said in a statement released by Golf Australia.

"I had a terrific experience last year in front of great crowds. They really loved the showdown between myself and Adam. And it proved to be a really important win for me.

"I believe my return to form was given real momentum in Australia last year. I've heard great things about The Australian Golf Club since the Jack Nicklaus redesign and I look forward to competing in front of the Aussie fans again later in the year."
