Redemption is our Ryder Cup motivation, says Watson

The prestigious biennial event begins at Gleneagles on Friday with USA aiming to prevent Europe from clinching a third straight victory.

The chance to make it a hat-trick of wins seemed unlikely after two days of play in the 2012 contest when Europe trailed 10-6 at the Medinah Country Club.

However, a rousing comeback on the final day helped Europe clinch an improbably victory in what was dubbed 'The Miracle of Medinah'.

USA captain Watson believes that everyone in his team is now desperate to make amends for that collapse.

"I think I made it very clear to them that this trip is a redemption trip," he said.

"Anyone that played in that team it's time to make amends and redeem yourselves from 2012. It's a motivation not a negative.

"I can tell you without hesitation that the motivation is there in each one of these players. I've talked with them, I've been with them, I've played with them.

"Their comments to me, the conversations I've had about how they feel about the Ryder Cup have left it very clear that these players are motivated to win this Ryder Cup."

Paul McGinley's European team are considered favourites by many, but Watson is confident USA can stop their run of defeats.

"The media, the people who look at the teams, they look at Rory McIlroy, they look at Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and think the European team is loaded," he added.

"But when the matches start on Friday morning there's going to be an equality of play. I know our team are totally committed to bringing the cup back."
