Record-equalling Henning crashes out in Johannesburg

Thursday joy quickly turned to Friday despair for Nic Henning as he crashed out of the Joburg Open.

The world number 1555 was a shock overnight leader at the European Tour event in South Africa after carding a tournament-record-equalling nine-under-par 62 after round one.

Henning's opening round, played on the West Course, included seven birdies and an eagle at the par-four third as he tied the benchmark set by Desvonde Botes.

However, all that hard work was undone on Friday, as Henning's tournament unravelled on the East Course.

Henning dropped eight shots including a double-bogey six at the par four 13th, with two birdies not enough to prevent him signing for a six-over-par 78.

That resulted in Henning slipping to three under par for the tournament and missing the cut to play the weekend.

South African compatriot Willie Coetsee subsequently took the outright lead. He moved onto 12 under for the tournament after a six-under-par 65 on Friday.
