Ramsay recovers to clinch Trophee Hassan II

RichieRamsay - Cropped

Scotland's Richie Ramsay won his third European Tour title on Sunday with a one-shot victory at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.

Ramsay had been among the leading pack for much of the competition and started well on Sunday, birdieing four holes in succession from the third, only to then follow a bogey at seven with a triple-bogey six on the short eighth.

However, the 31-year-old - one of three leaders coming into the final round - recovered after the turn to reach 10 under.

An impressive tee shot at the 12th proved the catalyst for a run of three straight birdies, which left Romain Wattel needing to pick up two shots in as many holes at the end of his round.

When Wattel could only make par at the 18th, having birdied 17, Ramsay was able to celebrate his first title since claiming the European Masters in 2012.

Wattel finished second, a shot ahead of six players tied for third at eight under.

"Walking down nine I was still level par and I knew there was a score to be at on the back nine," Ramsay told the Tour's official website.

"I stood over a putt at the 12th hole and thought my putter feels great. I thought just go for it, this is your time.

"I'm so proud. I'm off to celebrate with my caddie Ryan as well - who did a great job.

"I pretty much took it by the scruff of the neck the next two holes and the seven iron on the last is probably one of the best shots I've ever hit in terms of visualisation and execution, it was just perfect."

George Coetzee was among those tied for third and, as such, missed out on a place at The Masters at the Augusta.

The South Africa needed a win to book his spot at the first major of the year.
