England's Ian Poulter carded a bogey-free four-under 66 at the Honda Classic on Sunday, to start a PGA Tour event's fourth round in the lead for the first time in his career.

Poulter claimed a three-stroke advantage at the PGA National's Champion Course at the end of the third round, the first time in 185 attempts that the 39-year-old earned a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour.

Padraig Harrington shot a one-over 71 to drop below Poulter in a tie for second with Patrick Reed (70) at six under overall.

Poulter birdied the first, sixth, seventh and 12th holes to claim the overall lead at nine under.

After Friday and Saturday's action were severely hampered by heavy storms in Florida, the third round resumed in Palm Beach Gardens on Sunday with less than an hour's play already completed.

Brendan Steele was next on the leaderboard at four under overall, while Phil Mickelson was a shot further back at the start of the fourth round.

With the final round set to be split over two days, Poulter underlined the importance of maintaining his momentum late on Sunday.

"Every hole today was crucial, and every hole that we're going to go and play right now will be," he said.
