Players and fans are giddy with excitement over a new format that will be rolled out during this year's World Golf Championship-Cadillac Match Play tournament.

The new World Cup-like format begins on Wednesday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco with 16 four-player groups.

Every player will play one match against each fellow group member, with the player with the best record set to advance to the round of 16 for single-elimination match play.

Two-time quarter-finalist Graeme McDowell reckons it is ideal, telling the WGC's website: "Even if you lose on day one, you still have something to play for. Even if you win your first couple matches, you can go out on the third day.

"There's so much to play for this week."

McDowell is in Group 13 alongside Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry and Harris English.

With the WGC-Cadillac Match Play heading down a World Cup-style route, pundits have been keen to identify a 'Group of Death', with Group 11 the most worthy of that title.

2010 champion Ian Poulter, who has won four Ryder Cups, is a match-play specialist and will come up against world number 11 Jimmy Walker - the most consistent putter on tour.

Former US Open champion Webb Simpson is top quality when on song, while Gary Woodland smashes the ball off the tee and could get hot at the right time.

World number one Rory McIlroy - runner-up in 2012 - is grouped with Billy Horschel, Brandt Snedeker and Jason Dufner, while Masters champion Jordan Spieth will take on Lee Westwood, Matt Every and Mikko Ilonen.

Group Four is tasty with Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen, Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez, while Group Eight will be tough, as Dustin Johnson faces Victor Dubuisson, Charl Schwartzel and Matt Jones.
