Australian Richard Green finished strongly to tie for 11th at the Sicilian Open as Thorbjorn Olesen broke through for his first tournament victory on the European Tour.

Green dropped out of contention after a 74 on Saturday, but will be pleased with his round on Sunday as he carded a three-under-par 69.

Olesen also shot a 69 at the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort to seal a one-shot victory over the fast-finishing Chris Wood.

The 22-year-old Dane came into the final day with a three-shot lead but got off to a bad start with a bogey on the first hole.

But Olesen hit straight back with a birdie on the next hole and followed that up with four more birdies and one bogey on the front nine.

Olesen's back nine was solid with seven pars as he carded a three-under 69 for the day to finish 15 under overall.

The Dane's major challenger on Sunday was Englishman Wood who shot an eight-under 64 to finish just a shot behind Olesen in outright second.

Wood had a magnificent start to his final round with four birdies and an eagle on the front nine.

The 24-year-old managed three more birdies on the back nine, although his bogey on the 17th eventually cost him a play-off with Olesen.

Wood finished two shots ahead of Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen and Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts who tied for third, while Jose Manuel Lara of Spain finished fifth.

American drawcard John Daly finished alongside Green in a tie for 11th after a 70 in his final round.

Scott Strange, the only other Australian in the field, tied for 47th at two under, while Ireland's Peter Lawrie, who was top of the leaderboard after the opening round, shot a one-over 73 to finish the tournament on seven under, tied for 19th.
