Ogilvy on the charge

Local favourite Geoff Ogilvy has thrown down the gauntlet to overnight leader Ian Poulter midway through the third round of the JBWere Australian Masters at Victoria Golf Club.

Four shots adrift of Poulter at the start of his round, it took Ogilvy just three holes to wipe off the deficit.

It started with an eagle at the short 233-metre par-four first set up by a laser-guided tee shot that settled four feet from the hole, then a long-iron approach to a metre for birdie at two followed by a monster 15-metre birdie putt at the third.

Decked out in white to promote awareness and research into ovarian cancer, Poulter responded to Ogilvy's thrust with a devastating parry - tap-in birdies at the first and second to regain the lead and remind the field just how much he enjoys a scrap.

But Ogilvy came again.

After dropping a shot at the 398-metre par-four fifth, he birdied six and eight to rejoin Poulter in front at minus 10 before seizing the lead outright with another birdie at the 559-metre par-five ninth.

Ogilvy was right when he warned after vaulting into contention with a 66 on Friday that 'there's a really low score out there if you really play well'.

He'd completed Saturday's outward nine in just 29 with the prospect of more hot-scoring to come on the back nine which is comparatively much friendlier than the front.

Poulter was one under for his round through five holes after dropping a shot at the 154-metre par three fourth.

Other big movers on moving day have been Brent McCulloch who was three under for his round through eight holes to move to minus eight, one shot ahead of Steven Bowditch who had picked up four shots through 14 holes.

Two-under through 12 holes world No.1 Luke Donald sits six shots off the pace.

The best of the completed rounds has been David Smail's 65 while Robert Allenby fired a 67 to move to minus three overall.

There's no sign yet of the showers that were forecast with the chance of an afternoon thunderstorm.
