Former US Masters champion Phil Mickelson will compete at the Scottish Open after accepting the final sponsor's invitation.

Mickelson has added the European Tour event to his schedule after missing the cut at the PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, on Friday.

The 42-year-old has gone seven straight rounds without breaking par in a career-worst run, and is desperate to regain form ahead of the British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, starting July 19.

"I really have been off. I don't know what to say about that," he said after the Greenbrier.

"The parts don't feel that far off, but I haven't been putting them together."It doesn't feel bad off the tee, it doesn't feel bad with the iron play, it doesn't feel bad chipping or putting.

"But I'm making a lot of loose drives here or there, some loose iron shots here or there, missing some short putts here or there."

Mickelson finished 58th at the Scottish Open last year in a tournament shortened to 54 holes due to heavy rain.

World number one Luke Donald is the defending champion for the event at Castle Stuart, near Inverness.
