Australian David McKenzie is on track to earn his European Tour card after a brilliant second round at the qualifying school event in Girona on Sunday.

McKenzie fired a superb six-under-par round of 64 to vault up to a tie for third place at nine under.

He shot seven birdies in his round - with his only blemish coming on the par-three second - to be just four shots behind leader Sam Hutsby.

Englishman Hutsby was in stunning form on Saturday, starting the six-day event with a sublime 10-under 60, which saw him finish just one stroke away from breaking a European Tour record.

And he kept up his strong form in Spain with a consistent three-under 69, which sees him lead compatriot Andy Sullivan by two shots.

Swede Peter Gustafsson, who shot a stunning 63, is tied with McKenzie in third.

Hutsby began his round with birdies on holes three and seven, finishing the front nine bogey-free.

A birdie on hole 12 was followed by an eagle on the par-five 15th, but the 23-year-old bogeyed two of his last three holes to drop back to 13-under par for the tournament.

The man applying the most pressure to him is Sullivan, who followed up a first-day 65 with a six-under 66.

He hit five birdies on the back nine and could have closed to within a shot of Hutsby, only to bogey the last hole.

A group of seven players are a further shot back, with Spanish duo Raul Quiros and Jordi Garcia Pinto, Denmark's Joachim B Hansen, France's Julien Guerrier, Norway's Espen Kofstad, South Africa's Warren Abery and England's Lloyd Kennedy all at eight under, five shots off the lead in a tie for fifth.

Australian Andrew Tampion failed to back up his strong start to the tournament with his one-over-par round of 73 dropping him down to a tie for 37th at four under.

Wade Ormsby moved up to a tie for 77th after a 67, while David Bransdon is languishing in 98th place at one over.
