McIlroy works on draw shot

Rory McIlroy - Cropped

Rory McIlroy said he has worked on playing in the wind, after his first PGA Tour tournament of the year saw him cut at The Honda Classic.

Blustery conditions at Palm Beach Gardens contributed to the four-time major winner posting rounds of 73 and 74, which gave McIlroy an early week.

The Northern Irishman battled controlling his draw shot, but he said he worked on his right-to-left stroke in the wind ahead of the WGC-Cadillac Championship, starting Thursday.

"I identified a few things I needed to work on over the weekend and I feel like I have addressed those, and it was mostly due to playing in the wind," McIlroy said.

"I wasn't comfortable playing a few shots that I needed last week at PGA National and luckily it was still pretty windy over the last couple of days at home so I got to play in the wind and even in the practice round out there, the wind got up on the back nine so it was nice to be able to play some of the shots I think I'd need this week."

McIlroy, who won the European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic in February, said he took the positives out of missing the cut in Florida, where wild weather decimated proceedings and forced a Monday finish.

"If I was going to miss a weekend it wasn't a bad one to miss - being at home and with all the delays it gave me time to work on my game and work on what I needed to," he conceded.

"It was fine, Friday night was my Mum's birthday so we went out and had a nice time and got back to work on Saturday.

"I practised as much as I could inbetween all the weather and then Sunday had a good day and just worked on my game.

"I played the Seminole Pro on Monday and came here yesterday.

"I feel the last few days have been very productive and I feel in a better place and probably more prepared than I was last week."
