McIlroy wants winning end to season

The golfing community has witnessed a coming of age for McIlroy this season, with the world number one claiming the BMW PGA Championship, The Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the US PGA Championship.

Three of those triumphs came in succession, starting at The Open in July, as the Northern Irishman surged atop the FedEx Cup rankings.

McIlroy, however, lost his top ranking in the play-offs to Hunter Mahan last week after the American took out The Barclays - the first of three FedEx Cup events.

The second starts this week at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston and speaking ahead of Friday's opening round, McIlroy said winning the FedEx Cup would be the perfect way to end a strong year.

"I think now, I said at the Barclays last week, that in golf there's a still a few things in golf I haven't achieved, the FedEx Cup is one of them," the 25-year-old told reporters.

"It would be great to win. Apart from the money and everything else that goes along with it, I've played a lot of good golf this season and I should be right there until the end.

"So I might say last week I feel like this season deserves a good finish, I'm trying to keep it going and give it the finish it really should have."

McIlroy is familiar with the TPC Boston, having emerged victorious at the event by a stroke in 2012.

And McIlroy is confident he can mount a challenge for his fourth win in five starts.

"My frame of mind and where I am mentally is very similar," said McIlroy. "Very relaxed going onto the golf course.

"Not really putting a whole lot of pressure on myself. I'm just going out and playing, and I know that if I play well I'll have somewhat of a chance to maybe win the tournament.

"My golf game feels a little more in control now than it did back then, just with the way certain shots I'm hitting now I wasn't able to hit back then.

"I'm definitely driving the ball as good as I ever have if not better. Of course there are similarities but at the same time I'm a more experienced, more developed player than what I was a couple of years ago."
