McGinley unsure of Ryder Cup pairings

McGinley has been tasked with helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup, which tees off in Scotland on Friday, and the Irishman has a wealth of experience at his disposal.

World number one Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer are some of the names in the Europe squad.

McIlroy and McDowell teamed up in the opening foursomes match at Medinah in 2012, while Rose and Poulter were also paired together by Jose Maria Olazabal.

But whether McGinley follows suit remains to be seen as he continues to assess his options.

"I have a skeleton plan in place but I wouldn't say it is firmed up," McGinley told Sky Sports News.

"I want to discuss things with the vice-captains but more than I want to see how the players are.

"It is a little bit like horses from Ireland travelling over to Cheltenham – you want to see how they get over the journey.

"You want to see how tired they are and assess them all. The next four or five days will give us an insight into that.

"We'll assess that in the next few days and then firm up our ideas with regards to pairings."
