Kirk eyes Ryder Cup spot

Kirk was a surprise winner at TPC Boston, carding a five-under-par 66 to win the second FedEx Cup play-off event by two strokes ahead of Geoff Ogilvy, Russell Henley and Billy Horschel.

While the triumph - Kirk's third of his career - put him atop the points list and in the box seat for top honours in the FedEx Cup, it has thrown the 29-year-old right into contention for a spot at the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland later in September.

Kirk was 14th in the United States standings - outside the automatic selections - once the points closed at the US PGA Championship but he could well be a captain's pick when Tom Watson announces his final team on Tuesday.

"I definitely put myself in contention for one," Kirk said. "If I get picked great. If not, I'm still happy with my win today."

Kirk, however, refuses to believe he is assured of selection after victory in Norton, Massachusetts, which he said was the "biggest" win of his career.

"I certainly don't feel entitled or feel like I'm a shoe-in to get a pick," said Kirk.

"I obviously really put myself into consideration and it's something that I would love to do."

The USA tee off against defending champions Europe on September 26.
