Two-time major winner Jordan Spieth capped a remarkable year with a four-stroke victory at the season-ending Tour Championship, which saw him claim the lucrative FedEx Cup as a result.

Spieth hoisted the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup trophies aloft after carding a final-round 69 to finish nine under, comfortably clear of nearest rivals Danny Lee, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson in Atlanta on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Spieth, who won the U.S. Open and Masters this year, also reclaimed the world number one ranking as Jason Day faltered.

Day, who led the FedEx Cup play-offs prior to teeing off at the East Lake Golf Course on Thursday, only leapt to the summit of men's golf last week with his Deutsche Bank Championship victory, but his failure to finish in the top five - tied for 10th instead at two under following his 68 - saw Spieth return to the top.

Spieth came into the post-season with an overwhelming lead in the standings, but was quickly written off by many as he missed back-to-back cuts to start the play-offs, and Day threatened to run away with the lucrative purse.

The American, however, proved why he spent two different stints on top of the world rankings this season - and he will now enjoy a third - with a gritty performance at East Lake, having posted four consecutive rounds in the 60s - 68, 66, 68 and 69 to finish.

With the win, Spieth collected $1,485,000, making him the first player in PGA Tour history to eclipse the $12 million mark in earnings for one season.

In addition to that, he also received the $10m bonus awarded to the FedEx Cup champion.

Stenson, who won the event and the FedEx cup in 2013, trailed Spieth by just one shot heading into the final round, but was never able to get anything going.

The highlight of his round came when he drained a 50-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to get into a tie for second alongside Lee and Rose.

Lee fired a five-under 65 with seven birdies to finish ninth in the standings, while Rose shot a four-under 66, despite double-bogeying the 10th hole, to finish eighth in the play-offs.

Dustin Johnson posted a 64 - the lowest round of the day - to climb into a tie for fifth with Bubba Watson (67) and Paul Casey (70) on four under.

Meanwhile, former world number one Rory McIlroy (74) shared 16th at one over.
