Australian Matt Jones' hopes of securing a berth on the PGA Tour took a blow after he shot a 78 in the fourth round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in California.

After starting the round in a share of second, Jones now heads into the final two rounds with work to do, tied for 21st on five under.

American Will Claxton currently holds a two-stroke lead over Marco Dawson.

Claxton has been at the top of the leaderboard after each of the four rounds played so far, and his two-under par 70 on Saturday was good enough to keep him out in front.

Claxton is on 15 under, two clear of his compatriot Dawson, with South Korean Noh Seung-yul and American Harris English locked on 11 under.

American Bobby Gates is the next best on 10 under, with each of the top five players going round on Saturday at the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West in La Quinta, California, with players alternating between that and the TPC Stadium Course.

Two-time US Open champion Lee Janzen is three under the card, as is Jeff Maggert, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour.

Janzen is one of four former major winners in the field, with Shaun Micheel, PGA Championship winner in 2003, one under.

David Duval, British Open champion in 2001, is two over after a 73 on Saturday and 2002 PGA Championship winner Rich Beem is three over.

Of the other Australians Nathan Green is back in a tied for 44th after a round of three under saw him move two under overall.

Steven Bowditch (two under) is in a tie for 50th while Bronson La'Cassie is up into a tie of 55th after a sensational round of four under.

Steve Allan (even) is in equal 68th spot and Craig Hocknull (three over) is tied for 102nd and have plenty of work to do.
