American Jimmy Walker carded a five-under-par 67 to seize control of his hometown tournament with two rounds remaining in San Antonio.

Walker holed six birdies and dropped just one shot as he closed the Valero Texas Open second round at six under through 36 holes at TPC San Antonio.

The FedEx Cup leader, who won the Sony Open and finished runner-up at the Tournament of Champions, is a stroke clear of Australian Aaron Baddeley (71) and fellow American Charley Hoffman (72).

Walker teed off on Friday one shot behind overnight leader Hoffman but the four-time PGA Tour champion set out to erase the deficit early, birdying his opening hole - the par-four 10th on the back nine.

A bogey at the 17th - the only blemish on a near-faultless round for Walker - was sandwiched in between birdies at the 14th and 18th holes.

Walker stepped up his putting after the turn, with five consecutive pars followed by a run of three successive birdies in a four-hole stretch starting at the sixth to take the lead.

"A win anywhere means a lot," Walker said.

"But being at home, you get to have parents, in-laws, friends, best friends, distant family. It would be cool. It doesn't put any more pressure on you, I think.

"If anything you've got a nice support crew out there and you've got good vibes and good mojo — and I believe in all that stuff. So I think positive energy is good. I think we'll have a lot of that."

American duo Kevin Na (68) and Jordan Spieth (69) are tied for fourth at four under heading into round three.

Brendan Steele (68), Chris Kirk (71), Billy Horschel (70), Zach Johnson (71) and Phil Mickelson (72) are two shots further back as the Americans dominate the leaderboard.
