Scotland's Scott Jamieson carded a six-under par round of 66 to top the leaderboard after the opening day of the Spanish Open in Barcelona.

The 27-year-old shot eight birdies and two bogeys as he set the pace in the first round at the Real Club de Golf El Prat on Thursday.

The Scotsman however would have carved out a more commanding lead had he not fired bogeys in the fourth and 14th holes.

Englishman Steve Webster is tied for second alongside India's Jeev Milkha Singh, Romain Wattel of France and Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal, all one shot behind Jamieson at five-under.

Former Open de France champion Larrazabal is playing on his home course and was full of confidenc about his prospects for the weekend.

"I was ready to play in front of my people and have been dreaming of this round for a long time - since October when we knew the tournament was here," Larrazabal said.

"I know everything about this course. I know where to hit, where to miss and when to attack."

Frenchman Gregory Bourdy, Peter Lawrie of Ireland, South Africa's Thomas Aiken and Webster's compatriot Anthony Wall are a further shot behind after shooting opening rounds of 68.

Pre-tournament favourites Miguel Angel Jimenez, Matteo Manassero and defending champion Alvaro Quiros all struggled, with Jimenez shooting 71, teenager Manassero 73 and Quiros 74.
