How Bundaberg Rum fuelled Rod Pampling's course record at The Australian

Aussie golfer Rod Pampling, who beat Jordan Spieth’s course record at the Australian Open on Sunday morning, has revealed the secret to his remarkable round. And he may also have found the world's best hangover cure.

The Brisbane-based Pampling was four-over par and ten off the lead going into the final round before his 61 gave him the clubhouse lead.

Afterwards, he revealed the secret ingredient of his success was a night out on Australia’s favourite bogan beverage – Bundaberg Rum.

“I don’t usually drink during a tournament, either,” he joked after his fourth placed finish.

“But my old caddie, Simon, was down from Penrith and we hadn’t seen each other in a while, and considering I was four over, I didn’t think much was going on.

“We went out and…well, we had a few Bundys. Nothing major, just a couple of social drinks but it fuelled up the tank, I guess.”

Possibly still a little dusty early on, Pampling bogeyed the first when he teed off at around 9.30 in the morning, but tore around the rest of the course, shooting nine birdies and finishing with an eagle on the 18th.

His Bundy-fuelled night out wasn’t enough to get him over the line - Matt Jones (eight-under), Adam Scott and Spieth (both seven-under) took out the top three spots - but it was enough to earn the 46-year-old a berth at The British Open at Royal Troon in July.

He might have earned another sponsor too – or at least a spot on one of those Bundy TV ads.

How many men around the country will be trying to convince their wives to let them sneak in a quick 18 holes to cure their hangovers on a Sunday morning?
