The popular Spaniard is chasing a third consecutive win at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling - a remarkable feat that, if achieved, would see him become only the fourth man, after Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer, to win a European Tour event five times or more.

Jimenez lifted the trophy in 2004 and 2007 before regaining the crown in 2012. Backing up his success in 2013 would see him break his own record as the oldest winner on the European Tour.

"It always feels good to come back to Hong Kong – it is one of my favourite places in the world and it feels like coming home in some ways," the 50-year-old told a press conference.

"I love the city and the golf course at Fanling, and I have been very lucky to have enjoyed a lot of success here in the past and made a lot of friends and had so many good memories.

"I might be getting older but I still feel like I can keep competing on tour to give myself chances to win tournaments, and as long as I feel like this then I will keep playing. I would love to win this tournament for the fifth time.

"Not many people can say they have won any tournament five times, and to be able to say you have won one of the great tournaments in the world five times would be very special for me."

Jimenez will have another top-class veteran for company at Hong Kong Golf Club as four-time major-winner Ernie Els takes part in the event for the first time.

Lin Wen-tang's dramatic sudden-death play-off win over Rory McIlroy in 2008 marked the last time an Asian player won at the Hong Kong Open - preceding a period of European dominance.

Gregory Bourdy and Ian Poulter won in 2009 and 2010 respectively, while McIlroy went one better to take the title in 2011 before Jimenez's recent purple patch.

Sitting alongside Jimenez, Liang Wen-chong said: "I think it's time we took the trophy away from Miguel and kept in in Asia.

"Obviously the European Tour players really love it here and have had great success over the past few years, but hopefully the Chinese and Asian players can play well this week and try to get in contention on Sunday afternoon."
