Hend powers into Thailand Classic lead

ScottHend - Cropped

Scott Hend leads the Thailand Classic by one shot going into the final day's play in Hua Hin, with an eagle at the par-five 13th among the highlights of his round.

An impressive driving display from the 41-year-old saw him assume the lead from Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez with a 32-shot back nine contributing to an overall 66.

Having made the turn in 34, Hend shaved two further shots on the way home with his two-under at the 13th proving particularly impressive.

Hend almost gained an albatross at the 609-yard hole, but had to settle for eagle as he moved into the lead, with a bogey at the last proving the only low point for the reigning Hong Kong Open champion.

A consistent round from home favourite Thongchai Jaidee saw the Thai finish five under for the day to move tied second alongside veteran Jimenez.

The Spaniard has battled with illness in recent days and carded his worst score of the competition with a three-under 69.

Jimenez had begun the third round well - initially fending off the likes of Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat with the help of a birdie at the second that took him to 12-under overall.

However, from there he broke par just twice more - both after the turn - with Aphibarnrat slipping to fourth overall thanks partly to a costly bogey at the 12th.

He sits ahead of a clutch of players in tied-fifth including Alex Noren - who continues to impress following his recent return from long-term wrist problems - and Australian trio Andrew Dodt, Richard Green and Wade Ormsby.
