Fowler staying patient in major search

The American has been a consistent challenger at majors this year without breaking through.

Fowler was tied for fifth at The Masters before equal-second finishes at the US Open and Open Championship.

Speaking ahead of the PGA Championship starting Thursday, Fowler said he planned to stay patient.

"This year has definitely been the most comfortable that I've felt in the majors," he told a news conference on Wednesday.

"The more that I can put myself in contention on Sunday and possibly in the final group, I'll just get more and more comfortable. Being comfortable means more confidence.

"We'll keep knocking at the door. I don't think there is a specific time frame or anything like that. I'm not going to push it. But I'll be out there giving it my all."

Fowler has been working with Tiger Woods' former coach Butch Harmon since December.

He struggled early in 2014 – Fowler has missed seven cuts this year – but said he had learned plenty.

"I was just ready to see what I was ready to do with Butch and what we were able to make out myself and my game," Fowler said.

"It was a bit of a process, I missed more cuts than I would have liked too. But I felt I was able to learn a lot through the adversity.

"Not that I was missing cuts by a lot but it was a shot or two here and there.

"It seemed pretty natural and the flow of learning everything wasn't a struggle but I've definitely put the most work that I've ever put in this past year."
