USA suffered a third consecutive loss to Europe at Gleneagles on Sunday and it did not take long for Mickelson to openly criticise his skipper.

Veteran Mickelson questioned Watson's approach in Scotland, pointing to Paul Azinger's triumphant style in Valhalla six years ago.

Mickelson and Watson were also in a disagreement over whether the 44-year-old should have teed off on Saturday.

However, Mickelson's comments did not sit well with England's six-time major winner Faldo, who captained Europe in 2008.

"For him to sit there and throw the captain under the bus, that was a tough one," Faldo told BBC Radio Five on Monday.

"At least my [European] lot waited a couple of years.

"That should have been a private conversation. There's obviously a bit of aggro [aggravation] in the American team room."

Scotsman Colin Montgomerie also reacted angrily to Mickelson's post-Ryder Cup antics.

"You support your captain under all circumstances. In public, you respect and honour your captain," the 51-year-old told the Telegraph.

"The PGA of America selected Tom Watson as the best choice to try to win the Ryder Cup back. Unfortunately, the team didn't perform for Tom."
