Donald tops money lists

Luke Donald became the first man in history to top both the US PGA and European Tour money lists for earnings in a single season on Sunday.

Having already sealed first place in the US PGA standings, the world number one finished third at the season-ending Dubai World Championship to also bag top spot in the European Tour.

Donald carded a second successive six-under-par 66 at the Jumeirah Golf Estates' Earth Course, finishing three shots behind winner Alvaro Quiros.

Spaniard Quiros posted a five-under final round of 67 to reach 19-under overall, and claim the sixth European Tour victory of his career.

Paul Lawrie separated Quiros and Donald on the final leaderboard - the Scotsman also carded a five-under 67 to finish outright second at 17 under.

Going into the tournament, world number two Rory McIlroy had been the man capable of stopping Donald from making history.

The Northern Irishman needed to win in the United Arab Emirates and hope Donald finished no better than ninth.

After starting strongly with a six-under 66 on Thursday, the US Open champion could only manage three successive one-under 71s, finishing up in a share of 11th place at nine under.

McIlroy's subdued performance meant it soon became apparent Donald would enjoy a trouble-free passage into the history books.

But the outcome of the tournament remained in doubt following a rollercoaster beginning to Quiros' final 18 holes.

The 28-year-old made a flying start with consecutive birdies at the first three holes, and two more would follow at five and seven.

But he also carded three bogeys to reach the turn two-under par for the day.

Quiros regained his composure on the back nine, making seven pars, one birdie and no bogeys to reach the 18th hole with his one-shot buffer intact.

Any mistake with a daunting long putt on the final green could have let Lawrie back in at the last opportunity.

But Quiros shut the door on his challenger in style by sinking a monster eagle, duly pocketing the US$1.2 million prize for first place.
