Donald: Drive is the key to major success

Luke Donald believes that improving his driving could be the key change that sees him finally end his search for that elusive major title.

The former world number one has been a consistent performer in major championships, but the closest he has come to tasting victory are two joint-third finishes.

They came at the 2005 Masters and the PGA Championship a year later, and Donald - now ranked 34 - is working on his game to try to clinch that maiden triumph on the biggest stage.

"I wanted to play a bit more west coast this year and see if I can improve and become a better and longer driver of the golf ball and give myself better opportunities in the majors," he said.

"It has always been my goal to compete and win majors and I felt like that was a part of the game that if I improved would help me do that.

"I went to [swing coach] Chuck Cook after having serious thoughts about who I should go to and really enjoyed my time with him, after measuring between the beginning and the end though there wasn't a significant change, enough for me to warrant keep going and we both came to that decision.

"The logical thing for me was to go back to Pat [Goss] and I have had a lot of success with him and he has always been a mentor.

"Not that I wasn't working with him last year on my short game but it is certainly easier to have one coach rather than split between short game and swing and it has been fun being back with Pat and hopefully I can get back to the ways I was a few years ago."
