Defending champion Garcia out to continue strong run

Sergio Garcia is seeking to extend his recent impressive run at Doha Golf Club when he bids to become the first man to successfully defend the Qatar Masters.

In 2013, the Spaniard finished tied for second alongside George Coetzee, just one shot behind the victorious Chris Wood.

One year later, he finished joint top of the leaderboard with Mikko Ilonen, before going on to prevail in the third hole of a play-off.

With no man ever before having recorded back-to-back wins at this European Tour event, Garcia is in confident mood ahead of the first round on Thursday.

"I want to play as well as I can and put up a good defence of my title," he said. "I've started my season in Qatar for the last few years, and I always enjoy coming back.

"I came close to winning a few times, so it was nice to get over the line last year. I played really well on the last day to get into the play-off, then had to play really well all over again to beat Mikko.

"So I have some good memories, and hopefully they can inspire me to have another successful week.

"I just feel very comfortable here. The weather's usually great, although it’s a bit breezy.

"But it’s meant to warm up later in the week, so I’m looking forward to playing in my short sleeves with the sun on my back and hopefully a smile on my face."

Henrik Stenson is another man to have tasted victory at this event, following his triumph in the 2006 edition when he topped the leaderboard by three shots ahead of Paul Broadhurst.

The Swede suffered a disappointing result at the Abu Dhabi Championship last week when he missed the cut, although there was a silver lining in his second-round 68 compared to the opening day's 76.

"At least I played better the second day than the first day," he said. "Of course I hope to improve on last week's performance this week.

"It's early in the year and a work in progress, but I felt like I played half decent out there.

"It has been a good hunting ground - I guess I've figured out a decent way to play the course, and I've done some good scores over the years in windy conditions.

"It's just a good way for me to start off the season and I enjoy playing these weeks."
