Australian Day was in the mix at the PGA Tour's opening play-off event last week before eventually finishing equal second behind winner Hunter Mahan at The Barclays.

The 26-year-old - seventh in the FedEx Cup rankings - is now set for another shot at glory after surging into a joint one-shot lead with American Ryan Palmer at TPC Boston on Saturday.

Day carded a three-under-par 65, which featured a blemish-free front nine, before faltering with three bogeys in his final seven holes, including the 18th as he missed out on the outright lead.

However, Day was still happy with his position heading into the final two rounds in Norton, Massachusetts.

"Very encouraged, very motivated for the weekend, Sunday and Monday finish," Day told reporters at the end of round two.

"But I'm very, very happy with the position I'm in. I like to be in contention, [and] from last week, to get back into contention this week is [great].

"I'm very proud with how I've played over the last couple of days. I'm looking forward to playing in the last group, obviously.

"The times I put myself there the better I feel and the more comfortable I feel playing in final groups.

"I'm just going to keep trying to do the work, stay aggressive to my targets. And it's going to be very difficult over the next couple of days."
