Course record for Thailand Classic leader Hoey

Michael Hoey holds a one-shot lead at the Thailand Classic after carding a faultless opening round 64 to break the course record.

The Northern Irishman – starting at the ninth – was quickly on his way as he picked up two shots in his opening four holes, but a flurry of birdies around the turn put him firmly in control.

Hoey's clean hitting and quality on the greens saw him collect six shots in eight holes - including a 12-footer at the fifth - before coming home with three solid pars to hold a slender lead over Hung Chien-yao.

"We had 10 or 11 holes with not much wind, which was an advantage teeing off early," said Hoey.

"I hit the ball well, and it suits me that there's a bit of length off the tee; you can carry a few corners and reach the par fives in two.

"It has been a long time since I had a bogey-free card. To be bogey-free and have no fives on the card - and a course record - is a nice start. I'm swinging the club well so hopefully I can put three more good rounds together and see what happens.

"This is a marathon. I'm just pleased to get something out of it, because I've been working hard for a long time and not getting the scores. This is really satisfying to get a good score and hopefully I can follow it up tomorrow - Friday 13th is going to be lucky for me!"

Shiv Kapur had led the challenge to Hoey for long parts of Thursday as he shot a 66 to sit two shots back, however he was overtaken by three men before the end of the day.

Carlos Pigem raced past the Indian thanks to five birdies and an eagle three at the 18th to finish seven under, tied with Hung and Kiragech Aphibarnrat.

England's Mike Ford had grabbed the lead earlier in the day with a superb start to his round, the 36-year-old birdied the opening two holes before turning in 32, he made further gains at the 10th and 11th but dropped shots at 14 and 15 left him on five under.

One of seven players four shots back from Hoey is Miguel Angel Jimenez, the Spaniard had a fairly uneventful round until he reached the ninth and saw his approach go straight in to record an eagle.
