Clarke backs Woods to recover his form

TigerWoods - Cropped

Following a worst professional round of 82 at the Phoenix Open on Friday, Tiger Woods' recent dip in form hit a new low.

Woods finished 13 over for the tournament, having shot 73 on the opening day, as he continues to struggle to recapture the form that saw him win 14 major titles in the 1990s and 2000s.

The American now looks set to drop out of the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time in just over three years.

The former world number one is currently undergoing work on remodelling his swing, and close friend Darren Clarke says it will take time for Woods to get to grips with the alterations.

"It would be wrong to read any more into how Tiger played in Phoenix other than to say that any time you make major swing changes in your game you are going to have to crawl before you walk," he said.

"It may be fine on the practice range but you only find out what's really happening in your game in competition. If Tiger makes changes in his game then he does so for a reason.

"He's the best player in the world and his perseverance and dedication will ensure you'll find him back up at the pointed end of a leaderboard and not down at the bottom.

"So I am not at all surprised or shocked as that would be foolish, and if you're making changes in your game then you're making changes.

"He'll be fine. He's too good a player not to be."
