Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenez have been tipped as the two frontrunners in the race to be Europe's Ryder Cup captain in 2016 by Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

Stenson and Garcia played key roles in the team that won the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles under Paul McGinley and believe both Clarke and Jimenez would be up to the job.

"Most likely we're going to see a race between Darren and Miguel," said Stenson. "That's the beauty of being part of the Tournament Players Committee that no longer votes for it.

"I don't have to put any thought into it, I just have to wait like everybody else until the result comes out."

Previous captains have been selected by the players, but a five-man panel, including former skippers McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie, will be responsible for making the call this time around.

Stenson added: "They have enough experience between them to come up with a good decision.

"I believe they haven't met yet. They haven't managed to get that meeting together so I don't know when it's scheduled to happen."

And Garcia agreed with Stenson's assessment, stating: "I think those are the two big candidates and I think we are all excited to see how it turns out."

The 2016 Ryder Cup will be held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
