South Korean Na Yeon Choi scorched the field at the US Women's Open to take a six-stroke lead after Saturday's third round.

In blustery conditions at Blackwolf Run in Wisconsin, Choi did what only four others could by carding a sub-par round, with her seven-under 65 moving her within touching distance of her first major title.

Michelle Wie set the tournament course record at Blackwolf Run on Friday, but Choi went one better in the third round, with her eight birdies and lone bogey seeing her take the lead at eight under.

To put her round into perspective, of the players that made the cut, only 10 sub-70 rounds have been recorded.

Only four lower rounds have been recorded in the history of the US Women's Open.

Choi's compatriot Amy Yang is outright second at two under after carding a 69 while American Lexi Thompson, Japan's Mika Miyazato and German Sandra Gal are a shot further back at one under.

Overnight leader Suzann Pettersen of Norway endured a difficult day, battling to a 78 after a pair of double-bogeys to be nine strokes off the pace.

After her sizzling second round the crowds came out to see Wie, but she too faltered with a six-over 78 to fall out of contention at two over.

Australians Karrie Webb and Katherine Hull both made the cut, but are well out of contention on 12 and 13 over respectively.
