Emerging Scotsman Russell Knox has stormed home in the final round to claim the Nationwide Tour's Chiquita Classic by three strokes.

The 26-year-old from Inverness barely scraped into the Nationwide Tour as a Monday qualifier, but having made it to the roster he's made the most of the opportunity.

The latest win sees him climb to from 27th to fifth on the money earners' list as he's set himself up nicely for promotion to next year's PGA Tour, which takes the top 25 from the Nationwide Tour.

Knox started his round on Sunday with a one-stroke lead but produced a sizzling six-under 66 effort to claim the event by three strokes with a total score of 25 under.

"This is the best day of my life, 100 times over," Knox told the official PGA website.

"This is very exciting for me because it's my first trophy. On the mini-tours we just get a check."

Second-placed Billy Hurley, a former Navy Lieutenant, gave him a run for his money as he blitzed the Ohio course with an eight-under 64 that included six birdies on the back nine.

Billy Stuard was also on fire, posting a seven-under 65 as he finished two strokes further back at 20 under overall, alongside England's Greg Owen (67).

New Zealand's Bradley Iles was the best of the Australasian contingent, his four-under 68 on Sunday seeing him finish 10 strokes off the pace at 15 under overall.

He was still two strokes ahead of compatriot Danny Lee, who also posted four under for his final round, while Andrew Buckle (72) was the best of the Australians at 12 under.

Compatriot Alistair Presnall (72) was one stroke further back alongside New Zealand's Josh Geary (68).
