Hadley set to defend Puerto Rico Open crown

While the world's top 50 players contest the WGC-Cadillac Championship, defending champion Chesson Hadley returns to the Puerto Rico Open as the lesser lights of the PGA Tour tee off in Rio Grande.

Hadley captured his maiden PGA Tour victory in his 13th start by holding off Danny Lee by two strokes last year.

The 27-year-old American set a course record - 21-under-par 267 - en route to collecting the $630,000 winner's cheque at Trump International Golf Club.

"It's incredible. It's a dream come true," Hadley said after winning the tournament. "It opens up a lot of doors."

Hadley's win did open a lot of doors, having been granted a two-year tour exemption and spots in The Players Championship, PGA Championship and Tournament of Champions.

But Hadley is alarmingly out of form as he returns to the scene of his breakthrough triumph.

Hadley missed the cut at the Humana Challenge and Phoenix Open, although he tied for 10th at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am - his best performance this PGA Tour season.

However, that result was followed by consecutive cuts at the Northern Trust Open and last week's The Honda Classic, where he finished 12 over after 36 holes.

There is good news for Australian battler Jarrod Lyle, who is in the field for Thursday's opening round.

Lyle has not appeared on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in February, but the 33-year-old is set to make his fifth start since overcoming leukemia for a second time.

Brendon de Jonge, Rod Pampling, Andrew Svoboda, Bo van Pelt and Boo Weekley will also feature in Rio Grande.
