Casey reels in Poulter in Florida

Paul Casey - Cropped

Ian Poulter's bid to break his strokeplay drought on the PGA Tour faltered on Sunday, when the final round of the Honda Classic was halted due to bad light.

The situation at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida meant a Monday finish was likely following disruption to play on Friday and Saturday, with English pair Poulter and Paul Casey leading the field heading into the final day.

Casey started the final round six shots astray of Poulter but it took him nine holes - and seven lacklustre ones from Poulter - to see him eyeball his countryman at seven-under overall.

A four-under front nine saw Casey climb to the summit of the leaderboard, while Poulter needed a birdie at the seventh to claw his way back to two over through his final round.

Poulter has never won a strokeplay event on the US tour, with his two previous victories coming in matchplay formats.

American Patrick Reed is the closest threat to a foreigner winning the Honda Classic for the first time since 2012, after going even par in his seven final-round holes.

Reed (six under) is two clear in third, ahead of a group of five, including a revitalised Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson went one under in his eight holes of his final round, while the biggest rise of those in the top 10 was that of Daniel Berger - who moved to four under overall having been at even par through 54 holes.

Berger carded five birdies in 11 holes, to launch a late challenge for a maiden PGA Tour title.
