Bubba wins in playoff

American Bubba Watson has won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after narrowly beating countryman Webb Simpson in a playoff.

Having shared the overnight lead at TPC Louisiana, Watson and Simpson finished Monday's final round locked at 15-under 273 overall and needed two playoff holes to break the deadlock.

A three-foot birdie on the second playoff hole helped Watson collect his second PGA tour win of 2011.

But the result could have been far different had Simpson - who led by three shots with seven holes remaining - not grounded his club while putting for birdie on the 15th and subsequently incurred a penalty stroke.

KJ Choi of South Korea - the tournament's 2002 winner - shot a three-under 69 to move into joint third alongside Americans Tommy Gainey and Tommy Gainey, the latter of who moved an incredible 13 places up the leader board on the final day.

Australian Matt Jones was a shot behind in equal sixth, alongside George McNeill of the United States.

England's Luke Donald, who missed the chance to go top of the rankings last week, finished five shots off the pace after carding four birdies in the final six holes.

Watson moves to no.10 in the world with the victory, but was full of sympathy for Simpson after his penalty on the 15th.

"(He's) a good friend of mine, it was heartbreaking. He would have been an honor to win this golf tournament. It was sad to see it that way," he said.

"If it had been the last hole, it probably would have been more heartbreaking. But since it was 15, we both had to go on. At first it was just heartbreaking to see your friend."

"And to win a golf tournament that way, it's heartbreaking. But it happened so far back that the golf tournament wasn't won there. It was won in the playoff, I guess."
