Watson, who had previously won at Augusta National in 2012, shot a three-under 69 in the final round, staying calm as his rivals fell by the wayside one by one.

The 35-year-old American dropped behind Spieth on the second hole when his younger compatriot sank a birdie and the 20-year-old went two shots clear when Watson bogeyed the third.

But a birdie on the fourth hole saw Watson recover and as Speith - who was attempting to become the youngest-ever Masters champion - began to struggle with bogeys at eight, nine and 12, Watson started to take control.

A birdie on the 13th put Watson three shots clear at the top of the leaderboard and he held that margin for the remainder.

Watson finished on eight-under overall with Spieth and Sweden's Blixt in a share of second at five under.

Blixt shot a one-under 71 on Sunday to finish alongside Spieth with birdies on the eighth and 13th holes, plus a bogey on the seventh.

Spieth was left to rue missed opportunities as his even-par 72 included four birdies and as many bogeys.

Spanish veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez carded a 71 to claim fourth at four under, while Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar shared fifth after rounds of 73 and 74 respectively.

England's Lee Westwood (one-under overall) was the only other player to finish under par in seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 were Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, Germany's Bernhard Langer, Australia's John Senden, Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Americans Jimmy Walker and Kevin Stadler - with the group shooting even par.

Reigning champion Adam Scott finished in a tie for 14th at one over after a final-round 72.
