Golf legend Seve Ballesteros' neurological condition has worsened, the Spaniard's family has revealed.

The 54-year-old, who is recovering from brain cancer he incurred in late 2008, is recuperating at his home in northern Spain, and the latest news on his health suggests he may be battling through the final days of his life.

The five-time major winner had surgery in late 2008 followed by a course of chemotherapy.

His family revealed the news in a brief statement on his website.

"The Ballesteros family informs that Seve's neurological condition has suffered a severe deterioration," the statement read.

"The family will inform accordingly about any change in his health condition and takes this opportunity of thanking everyone for the support that both Seve and his family have been receiving during all this time."

Ballesteros claimed 87 titles during his career, as well as leading Europe to Ryder Cup glory in 1997.
