Australia has been selected to host the 2019 Presidents Cup after being awarded the rights on Saturday.

Melbourne will stage the biennial event in four years' time after the United States hosts the tournament in 2017, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem confirmed.

Finchem made the announcement from South Korea, where the 11th Presidents Cup is underway, while also confirming Melbourne as the location for the 2016 World Cup of Golf.

Melbourne is set to host the Presidents Cup for the third time in 25 years, having staged the prestigious event in 1998 and 2011.

"I'm very, very happy that we're returning to Melbourne, where I won the World Cup," said Australian and world number two Jason Day.

"Whether we play at Royal Melbourne or some other golf course, I just like playing that sort of golf, and being back in front of the home crowd will be fantastic.

"And for up and coming players from Australia, they have something to shoot for – that goal of getting on that Presidents Cup team and playing in their home country."
